I'm an avid Social media user, so all of these phrases and words are part of my everyday vocabulary now and I don't think twice about what they mean and the context they're used in, but for those of you who only really use Social Media for your business, these phrases might just look like gibberish to you.
I thought it would be helpful to go through the most commonly used ones and tell you what they all mean.
A commonly used hashtag which means Behind the scenes
Social media algorithms are a way of sorting posts in a users' feed based on relevancy instead of publish time. Social networks prioritize which content a user sees in their feed first by the likelihood that they'll actually want to see it.
Tagging is when you attach a person or pages name to an image, video or status update. Either to backlink to the profile you got it from, let viewers know who is in the image or to show the image to the person you are 'tagging'
A hash sign followed by a word or phrase that is used on Social media platforms and apps. It helps users identify content on that particular topic
An image, video, piece of text, etc. Typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations.
A lot of Social media platforms use 'Story' features now. What these are is places you can post images and videosto, that only last 24 hours and aren't added to your main feed. On Instagram people predominantly use stories so they can still post photos and videos to their profile but it won't interrupt their Instagram Theme
A commonly used hashtag which means Flashback Friday
A 'Live' is a live stream video that you can do via Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter and it allows your contacts to see and interact with you real time.
The word Vlog is an amalgamation of the words video and blog/log. Meaning it is a form of a blog post but the method is video rather than text.
An effect you apply over top of a photo or video, that may give it a different tone, colour, saturation or may even add an animation.
Clickbait is sensationlist titles that people give to videos or blogposts purely for purpose of engagemnt, traffic and revenue. It seems like a good idea but in theory this is something you DO Not want to do, if you want people to like you and the content you create!
This is pretty much what says on the tin. This when either a particular Hashtag, video or other piece of content is is popular on a Social media platform
An abbreviation of because
A thread is a stream of content, beginning with the initial post (whether it is a tweet, picture of video) with all of the conversations and comments that follow it.
An abbreviation of without
An animation added to text messages, status updates or captions that indicate the feelings or emotions of the individual posting it.
A (usually anonymous) person online that leaves malicious or neagtive messages or comments on other peoples content.
A commonly used hashtag which means Throwback Thursday
When something goes viral it means that it gains traction, views, likes and comments extremely quickly and is usually seen all over the world in a very short space of time.
A tag that assigns a Geographical location to a photo or video posted to a Social Media site
The name that you use for you profile that comes after the @ symbol
A photo that you take of yourself
An Instagram theme is when you make your Instagram feed visually consistent. Whether it's with a certain tone, colour or you feature the same theme of photographs all the way through. It makes it look neat and visually appealing
If someone comments this on one of your posts, what they're saying is if you follow them, they will follow you back. This is a very outdated way to try to gain followers and once you have followed them, they will either unfollow you very quickly after initally following you or not follow you back at all. Don't fall into of follow for follows
This is the same as above but it is Like for like. Where, for example, someone will like 5 of your photos and you like 5 of theirs back. Pointless I know but people still do it!
This is the stream of content that appears on the home page of whichever social media you use. It's the content that the people you follow (or are friends with) post.
This is just an abbrevation for Instagram
