What is a .uk domain name?

Most people have heard of .co.uk domain names, which have been available since 1985.

In June 2014, Nominet (the organisation in charge of uk domain names) released the .uk domain name (eg without the .co bit). They made it so that for the first 5 years only someone who owned the .co.uk would be able to register the .uk (to stop people from trying to steal your brand or identity!)

So for example as we own ph9.co.uk, we were the only ones allowed to purchase ph9.uk

This all ends on 25th June 2019, after which .uk domain names become a free for all and anyone can register them.

Why should I buy the .uk version of my name?

We recommend that everyone buys the .uk version of their domain name simply to prevent somebody else from doing so!

The last thing you want is a competitor, or a company with a similar name to buy the .uk version of your domain name.

I already have a .co.uk, doesn't that mean I have the .uk too?

No, not unless you've specifically asked to register it.

What will happen if I don't buy the .uk domain name before 25th June 2019?

A competitor or company with a similar name will be able to buy it!
